Temari Workshops

Silk Temari Jewelry Workshop: Asanoha

Experience traditional Japanese temari embroidery and create a ready-to-wear silk necklace or bag charm with Asanoha pattern.

Workshop duration: 2h
Workshop skill level: beginner
Price: 8,800 yen
Date and time: check the booking pages below, or contact directly for additional dates.
Location: Meguro Station, Tokyo

Requirements for participants:

  • Everyone is welcome, families, friends and couples.

  • Participants must be comfortable working with a needle.

  • Participants must be ready to work on a relatively small scale.

  • Experience making traditional "big" temari balls is a plus, but NOT required.

  • Guests ages 12+ can attend.

What will you be making: Participants will be embroidering a small temari with the traditional Japanese geometric pattern "Asanoha". The temari base (dodai-mari) will be prepared in advance by the instructor, and participants will embroider the pattern using Japanese silk threads. You will have a choice of colors to work with. After you complete the embroidery, you will assemble finished temari as a necklace or bag charm. At the end of the workshop you can try your hand at wrapping a small temari base yourself.

What to expect during the workshop:

  • Check out the samples and choose a temari base color and threads you like.

  • Learn how to work with silk threads.

  • Follow the demonstration and the step-by-step printed instructions.

  • While we are stitching, the instructor will talk about the history of Japanese temari and traditional patterns.

  • At the end of the workshop you can try your hand at wrapping a small temari base yourself.

  • The instructor will answer your questions and point you toward additional resources if you are interested in continuing to study temari.

  • All materials are included in the price, and necessary tools are provided at the studio.

  • This is a small-group workshop with a maximum of 4 participants, which guarantees personal attention.

For Kids and Beginners:

This workshop offers alternative options for small kids and beginners. If you're not a confident stitcher, you can work on a larger temari base with colorful cotton threads and make a bag charm, Christmas tree ornament, or ball toy.

What you will take home:

  • Your finished temari.

  • Kumihimo silk necklace or bag charm set for your temari.

  • Instructions used in the class.

Location: The workshop is held in central Tokyo, a 5-minute walk from Meguro station (JR lines and subway). The studio is wheelchair accessible. Directions will be provided after the registration.
