Temari Workshops & Classes

Temari Jewelry Workshop: "Asanoha" Necklace

Experience traditional Japanese temari embroidery and create a ready-to-wear silk necklace.

Workshop duration: 2h
Workshop skill level: intermediate
Price: 8,800 yen
Date and time: check the booking pages below
Location: Meguro Station, Tokyo

Requirements for participants:

  • Participants must be comfortable working with a needle and have some previous experience with embroidery.

  • Participants must be ready to work on a relatively small scale.

  • Experience making traditional "big" temari balls is a plus, but NOT required.

  • Guests ages 12 and up can attend. The above requirements apply to all ages.

What will you be making: Participants will be embroidering a temari pendant with the traditional Japanese "Asanoha" pattern. The temari base (dodai-mari) will be prepared in advance by the instructor, and participants will embroider the pattern using Japanese silk threads. You will have a choice of colors to work with. After you complete the embroidery, you will assemble the necklace. At the end of the workshop you can try your hand at wrapping a small temari base yourself.

This is a small-group workshop with a maximum of 4 participants, which guarantees personal attention.

What to expect during the workshop:

  • Check out the samples and choose a temari base color and threads you like.

  • Learn how to work with silk threads.

  • Follow the demonstration and the step-by-step printed instructions.

  • While you are stitching, the instructor will talk about the history of Japanese temari and traditional patterns.

  • At the end of the workshop you can try your hand at wrapping a small temari base yourself.

  • The instructor will answer your questions and point you toward additional resources if you are interested in continuing to study temari.

  • All materials are included in the price, and necessary tools are provided at the studio.

What you will take home:

  • Your finished temari pendant.

  • Silk Kumihimo cord necklace for your pendant.

  • Handmade fabric pouch for storing the finished necklace.

  • Instructions that were used in the class.

Location: The workshop is held in central Tokyo, a 5-minute walk from Meguro station (JR lines and subway). The studio is wheelchair accessible. Exact location will be provided after the registration.
